We can’t be certain of all things in life but one thing I am fairly certain on is that the cost of driving our cars on our roads will not be going down.
The need and cost for driving a truck was becoming harder to justify, so two years ago I sold it and purchased a Hybrid vehicle. Between the two vehicles I went from 16 MPG to 47 MPG. Not only did I notice the fuel savings, but also in the auto insurance savings too. It was a good but knew it could be better.
In April 2011 it was converted into ‘Plug-In Hybrid’. The system installed adds energy to the factory hybrid battery in a safe and controlled manner. The end result is increased fuel economy as the gasoline engine does not have to ‘work as hard‘ to propel the vehicle. How much better? Well, under urban driving conditions it can achieve over 100MPG!! It is currently one the most fuel efficient vehicles in Alberta. The 4000 watt battery system is recharged in our garage from a standard 110 V socket. The previous $200 per month fuel bill has now gone down to about $36, plus $4 of electricity.
The conversion will pay for itself within three years had I otherwise kept my old truck on the road. After that our PHEV fuel cost will be over four times less than the average vehicle on Alberta roads. Nothing small to ignore considering the trend of gas prices these days!
