What is Green Burglary, what can we do about it?

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:      Posted date:  July 16, 2012

When you put out your recyclables, is it ok for an unauthorized person to pick it up? Do you give your recyclables to scavengers when they come begging, or do you put them off?   Recyclables transported on bicycles, captured by Gothamist.com Recyclables transported by pickup trucks, reported by SF Chronicle While millions of you worry about your job, family,  future and security, some cities and their waste collection contractors have very different worries - recycling theft, or scavenging, or what I called "Green Burglary". After the introduction of container- deposit legislation, recyclables...

By day, it’s a soccer ball…by night, it lights bulbs!

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:      Posted date:  June 16, 2012

Four Harvard students came up with the idea for the sOccket, a soccer ball pictured below, that generates and stores electricity during normal game play. The stored electricity in the ball can then be used to light an LED lamp, or charge a cellphone or battery. Ecoist handmade handbags are made from recycled candy wrappers, food packages, soda labels, and other recycled materials. A US based company collects waste and “upcycle” it  into eco friendly bags, recycled purses, and one-of-kind, limited collection handbags, pictured below. You’ve heard of a bright-white smile, what...

Easy being “green” by walking to work for 13 years

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:      Posted date:  June 4, 2012

When I moved to Edmonton in the late '70s after the original energy crisis I thought it would be great to have a job close to where I lived. Over the next 20 years circumstances gradually evolved to allow me to take a position 1 block from my residence. As a result I have been able to walk to work for the past 13 years. By: Lorne Earl

Every year thousands of plugged in, dynamic individuals receive their Permaculture certification and go out into the world to apply these amazing teachings and principals in their own lives, their communities and on global & international initiatives. I am honoured to be working with the Ermineskin Cree Nation by Hobbema, Alberta helping to transform a 4 acre area into a community garden, food forest, teaching centre and Permaculture demonstration site. I get goose bumps just thinking about what a difference Permaculture makes in this world and this is even more apparent when working with...

Solar powered home generates hefty costs along with electricity

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:  home energy savings, selling to the grid, solar    Posted date:  March 16, 2012

EDMONTON - For Tanya Kushneryk, solar power goes back to the 1970s, when her father built a system using black piping warmed by sunlight to heat the family swimming pool. “It was always warm in the water all summer. I remember how our solar system was a bit unusual for the time, but it worked.” On Thursday, the Kushneryk family helped Calgary-owned Enmax Energy Corp. launch its new solar panel program with a rooftop installation Read more from Edmonton Journal

Sustainability Marketing

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:  Sustainability Marketing    Posted date:  March 7, 2012

Before spending a dime to market your products or services in 2012, here are some questions to consider. Planning your sustainability marketing is as important  as the campaign itself. What are the big companies doing? How are they doing it?  What initiatives have the provinces put forward as a model and example of how we  can become more sustainable? Are you aware of the measures your company can take to make a difference, however big or small? How much does your company invest to incorporate its green programs, actions, purchase, and affiliations into its marketing? Are your customers like...

Is the Demand for Green Products Growing?

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:  SMXOlRqP    Posted date:  March 4, 2012

Most people want to be eco-friendly but for the most part, at least sometimes, going green technlogy is not financially a good idea. I have looked at eco-friendly and green technology alternatives like, "igo green charger" and have adapted where it makes financial sense. So far I have also installed solar panels on my home but while looking for an electric car I find the cost doesnt justify it for me. While I am passionate about making green choices and opting for green technology whenever possible it is up to people like you and I to spread awareness and let the companies know there is a demand. Your...

Interior Designer

Posted by: greencrusader    Tags:      Posted date:  February 2, 2012

I have been designing in Edmonton 7 years now and in the last few years Edmonton and surrounding residents are becoming more aware of the benefits of going green. When renovating a home it can be costly and in the past it was an added expense to purchase products to build an environmentally friendly home. As time went on suppliers lowered the cost of materials so that it is more attainable for families to build safer and longer lasting homes. As a designer I encourage my clients to explore the options of using green products before purchasing the everyday materials, they will notice the cost in building...
